SECOND YEAR: Unit Briefing (Digital News Production)

Today was our first day back from our summer holidays and the first day of our second year. We were all introduced to our new unit 'Digital News Production' by Helen, our course leader, and were set to work in either a group of three or four people.
However, it was a rather exciting day, as we were shown the new rooms that were created for us over the summer, and how the space we had last year has been transformed in a very professional and welcoming work environment.
Regarding our course, we have been challenged to work on two units simultaneously. Bellow I've written a bit about one of them, Digital News Production:

DIGITAL NEWS PRODUCTION UNIT:

When we were first introduced to this unit, I got a bit worried. One of the reasons being that I have never been involved in a situation where live television is a major factor in the whole project. We've worked on numerous occasions on our production of our own films, but I feel that this is a totally different path we're taking from the one we've been used to. I've done a few interviews when I was back at school; one of them being the interview I did with my school's former headmaster, which was one of the most interesting interviews I've ever done. Some reasons being that I learnt a lot about the place I studied at and how a whole corporation functioned, even in very difficult situations. However, although I've got some interviewing experience, I'm still worried about filming for television, indeed for the news as it has to include current affairs, involving a lot of realism, as opposed to our films (excluding our documentaries), and the affairs we're going to present to our audience must be accurate and very well written.

My main goal, here, is to go beyond my comfort zone and work outside my safety- zone, as this will definitely challenge me with a lot of great outcomes, such as confidence in my future work/projects and great experience in various platforms, such as live television.

PROJECT BRIEF:

  • Group of 3-4 people

  1. Design our own branded digital online news channel via websites like YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

  • Should include: our own original title sequence/GFX/branded strapline/stings that fits our own original channel
  • Promotional package
  • Appropriate branding/banner at top
2.  1 news package per group-> 2-3mins

3.  1 "live" OB report with a reporter on location (recorded as live to the specified duration of 2mins) which may include some pre-shot material

4.  All work from our workshops should also be uploaded on our channel.

5.  Our films should also be supported by written material, on the channel.

As part of this unit, we have to also write a 1500 word case study, in which we have to compare two main evening news programmes from the same day on either BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 OR Sky, and we should consider the differences and similarities, in various aspects of each.

I haven't decided yet which two channels I'm going to compare for my essay, but once I do, I'll definitely update you all. Also I'll be updating you soon on the work we'll be doing with my group.
Thanks for reading my once-again long post.
Yours,
I.
