DIGITAL NEWS: Editing | Graphics | Green Screen

EDITING:

At first, when we were assigning each other's roles for this project, we had decided to all take a different role in the editing process. However, as the time came to edit and as it seemed like I was more comfortable editing on Final Cut Pro rather than Adobe Premiere, it seemed like a good idea to stick to me editing the visuals of the whole piece with the 'supervision' of our director, rather than using different software between all of us and mixing up the edits.

However, at the beginning I felt really uncomfortable, when I was 'given' the role of the editor as I hadn't used all the editing software for quite a long time and it seemed almost impossible for me to edit the whole news project without any major help.

The first steps I took were to:
  • Watched various tutorial-styled videos online- mainly on YouTube but also on Lynda.com (a website we were recommended to use back when we were first years)
  • Read tutorial articles & watched videos on NoFilmSchool.com (a website/blog I've been using for quite a while now- demonstrating filming techniques, editing techniques, etc.)
  • Asked Ferg, our support technician, on many occasions for help and any editing tricks he got.

OPENING/CLOSING TITLES | GRAPHICS:

Watching tutorial videos about motion graphics, definitely refreshed my memory as I hadn't used the software in a while (as I mentioned above).
Below I have attached a basic tutorial video on After Effects and how to create motion graphics:

The process of editing the whole news project was stressful as it was, mainly due to the amount of time I was left to edit the whole film (1 week); but doing the graphics, title sequences and the logo added even more pressure on me, so I asked for some extra help (with the editing of the package) from the director, as she already knew how to use Final Cut and had also been checking up on the edits, as I was doing it.

At the beginning,

NEWS PIECE:

My final thoughts on the final outcome?

To be honest, I'm quite impressed with how it came out. Though at some parts during the film/news piece there were some issues with the sound levels and in general with the transitions between clips. I personally believe that if we had focussed more time on the edit, and had even three people working on various aspects of the editing process- rather than having two people doing the website and social networking site profiles, then we would have been done quicker.
